Useful tips on how to keep Kardean flooring tip top!

It is always useful to know some facts about the flooring you are having laid, this helps you to keep it looking its best for as long as possible to give you value for money.

Karndean flooring isnt the cheapest kind of flooring you can get but its lifetime is so much longer than the average vinyl flooring you can get.

Q – Who is Karndean International?
A – Karndean is the leading manufacturer of vinyl design flooring. They are well known in the UK, and are now distributing in the US.

Q – What is Karndean made of?
A – Karndean flooring is made up of pure virgin PVC with high quality plasticizers and is manufactured to create a textured surface which replicates the natural products.

Q – Will a Karndean floor be slippery?
A – As with most smooth floor coverings, water and other liquids on the surface of the floor can make them slippery. Karndean floors do have high levels of non-slip properties, however to prevent falls, clean spills up immediately and keep the floor dry.

Q – Will Karndean fade?
A – Like any other floor covering, Karndean may incur a slight fading when in direct sunlight for long periods of time.

Q – What are the differences between each of the Karndean ranges?
A – The difference between the ranges; Knight Tile, Renoir, Van Gogh, Michelangelo and Da Vinci, is that each product has a different wear layer, therefore has a different life expectancy.

Knight-Tile – 0.3mm Wear Layer, 12 year residental warranty
Michelangelo – 0.5mm Wear Layer, 12 year residental warranty
Renoir – 0.5mm Wear Layer, 15 year residental warranty
Van Gogh – 0.5mm Wear Layer, 15 year residental warranty
Da Vinci – 0.7mm Wear Layer, 20 year residental warranty

Karndean vinyl flooring can also be used commercially. All lines have a 10 year commercial warranty, except for Knight-Tile. Karndean’s Knight-Tile Line has a 10 year light commercial use warranty.

Q – What are the differences between Metallic Strips, Feature Strips, and Design Strips?
A – Strips give a contemporary feel to any Karndean floor when added between tiles & wood planks to simulate grouting or to complement or contrast with the main product.

Metallic Strip – Available in: 3mm, 5mm, 10mm, 30mm and 76mm. The Metallic Strips may be used in Standard Borders and features.

Feature Strips – Available in 6 colors, these 5mm wide strips are usually used on tile floors to give the effect of natural grout lines or to complement wood planks.

Design Strips – These are strips cut from another tile or wood plank and are available in 3mm, 5mm, 10mm, 30mm and 76mm widths.

Q – What are Standard Borders, and Design Strips?
A – Standard Border – A standard border is a patterned border, designed to complement tile and wood plank floors. Karndean have selected an assortment of decorative border options to accompany all the ranges.

Design Border – These are single strips of product which can be added to the edge of your floor. Design Strips are available in 3mm, 5mm, 10mm, 30mm and 76mm widths. Metallic Strips are also available.

Q – Can I fit Karndean myself?
A – Due to the complexity of the product, Karndean is not promoted as a DIY product and we recommend that it is only installed by professional fitters.

Q – Is there anything I need to do before the floor is laid?
A – Prior to laying Karndean, products must be acclimated to room temperature. Remove material from packaging, spread out and allow to condition in the room where installation is to take place at a constant temperature of 65°-85° for a period of 24-48 hours prior to installation. This temperature should be maintained during installation and for a 24-48 hour period after installation.

Q – Where can Karndean be laid in my home?
A – Karndean flooring can be laid in any room in your home including the bathroom, kitchen, bedroom, living / dining room, hallway, conservatory plus any room that you wish.

Q – Can Karndean be laid in a conservatory?
A – Yes, it is possible to install Karndean in rooms where temperature extremes are likely to occur. A Karndean High Temperature adhesive (HT) or Epoxy must be used. Karndean products must be acclimatized to room temperature 24-48 hours before installation, during and for a period of 24-48 hours after installation. It may be necessary to protect the room from direct sunlight during fitting.

Q – Can Karndean be laid over under floor heating?
A – Yes, Karndean can be fitted over floors incorporating under floor heating, but these must be insulated to ensure the surface temperature does not exceed 80°F. The under floor heating must be switched off 48 hours before, during, and 48 hours following the installation, and Karndean High Temperature or Epoxy adhesive must be used. Please check the under floor heating products instructions prior to fitting Karndean.

Q – Is Karndean suitable for use on walls or ceilings?
A – No. Karndean is a floor-covering therefore it is not recommended to be laid anywhere apart from the floor.

Q – Can Karndean be laid outside?
A – No. Karndean is not suitable for outside use.

Q – Can I use Karndean next to an Aga stove or an open fire?
A – If you are fitting Karndean next to an Aga stove or open fire ensure that the product is not in direct contact with a hot surface of the stove or fire place. Karndean should not be laid where floor temperature exceeds 27°C (80°F). Like any other floor-covering, Karndean will burn if flames or a spark lands on the vinyl.

Q – What are the correct room conditions for installation?
A – The room should be a constant temperature of between 18°C (64°F) and 26°C (79°F) for at least 24 hours before, during and after installation.

Q – The floor has been laid, now what?
A – The floor should not be washed and furniture should not be replaced for 24 hours after being fitted. To get the best from your new Karndean floor we advise that you follow the Karndean Cleaning & Maintenance System. Karndean floors are very hardwearing and like all vinyl products, regular maintenance will enhance the beauty and durability of your new floor.

Q – How do I remove scratches?
A – If Karndean’s Dim Glow has been applied after the floor was laid, light scratches can be removed by applying a small amount of Karndean Basic Stripper to the affected area.

Q – What is the best way to clean a Karndean floor?
A – One advantage of having a Karndean vinyl floor is that it is extremely easy to clean and maintain. For best cleaning result use the Karndean Routine Cleaner regularly. If necessary, sweep the floor with a soft, clean brush to remove any loose grit and dirt. Use 1 quart in a bucket with about 3 quarts of cold water. Keeping the mop damp, not wet, mop over the entire floor area and leave to dry. DO NOT USE non-Karndean cleaning products as some cleaning products contain agents that can damage the floor.

Q – Can spilt liquids seep through tile edges?
A – A Karndean floor should have been fitted tightly so that no spillages seep through tile edges or custom cuts. Spills should be cleaned up immediately to avoid slippery surfaces.

Q – What floor mat should I use on a Karndean?
A – Do not allow rubber backed mats or rubber footed furniture to come into contact with the floor. Products used in the manufacturing of the rubber backed mats may migrate to the Karndean vinyl flooring and stain it.

Q – How should I protect my Karndean vinyl floor against furniture?
A – Table and chair legs can scratch a Karndean floor so should be protected by applying felt pads to the underside of the feet.

Q – How do I remove black scuff marks from my floor?
A – Dilute a small amount of Karndean Basic Stripper in some water. Use a moistened cloth (or a non-abrasive nylon scouring pad for persistent marks) with the diluted solution. You may need to apply a small amount of Dim Glow to the area affected.
